Excellent exposure of the acetabulum with safety during reaming of the femoral shaft. One patient one hip died of medical disease unrelated to the hip disease. The patient is placed in a lateral decubitus position and the limb draped so that it can be moved during surgery. The direct lateral approach can be performed with the patient in the supine or the lateral decubitus position.
